I’ve got a bit of a problem with Product Club at the moment. It’s a difficult thing to talk about, but I’m not sure that it should be. A personal hurdle I need to overcome, for sure. I’ve reached out to a few people for guidance, but I thought I’d air my feelings here too.
So what’s the problem?
Right now, the Product Club community is made up of mostly white males. That means whenever I share what we’ve been doing in our sessions, or put testimonials on the signup page - I’m presenting white men.
This compounds the signal that this is a majority white community. Hardly an inclusive message and one that I’m sure doesn’t make a welcoming place to people of colour.
I want to improve this. But I’m not sure exactly how. As I speak to people over the next few weeks, I’ll share my thoughts on how I’m approaching this. I’ve had a few ideas, but I worry about how they’ll be received. And that source of worry is what bothers me.
As a white male, I’ll be honest - I feel a little scared about doing or saying the wrong thing. I’m sure this isn’t peculiar. I guess that’s what they call ‘white guilt’. But regardless of how I feel, I want to make Product Club as welcoming and diverse as possible.
